RadioTales: The Bieber Tweeter
Every radio person will tell you, the best stories never make it onto the air. I have so many they could fill a book, that said…I want to save paper so..I’ll use this blog.
We (radio announcers) get so many weird and bizarre phone calls. Think about it, we’re on the air for 4 hours a day taking calls and talking to people..statistically you’re gunna hit a few crazies a long the way. Justin Bieber fans are nutty. I can’t even imagine what it’s like to be him. I used to make fun of him all the time…now I just feel bad for the guy. Here’s his fans…they buy his records, seeing his movie…and they truly believe THEY are the reason he got a record deal. SPOILER ALERT: It was a marketing campaign. If you use Twitter and are in radio you’ve seen “the crazy” first hand. I’ve seen some radio DJs out right SCREAM AT JUSTIN BIEBER FANS (or at least use an excessive amount of CAPS on Twitter). I don’t care for putting down fans of any artist..as long as they are paying for his music..go as crazy as you want. But that doesn’t mean I won’t poke fun at you.
I’ve worked for a lot of great radio stations, one of which was a Top 40 station in Victoria B.C. called 107.3 Kool FM. I was the Afternoon Announcer and was on from 2pm-7pm. If you know me, you know I am a music freak. Always downloading new tracks on iTunes from bands 95% of people have never heard of. When you’re working a high energy Top 40 show you actually get into the music a lot. You have to, it’s keeps your energy up…but by the end of the show you’re exhausted. I have a theory, if you’re not tired by the end of your on-air shift..you’re not working hard enough. I’m getting off topic..
One afternoon I got a call from a Justin Bieber fan who wanted to vote for a song for the Kool 5 @ 5 Countdown. Some people would have just taken the vote and hung up..that’s boring…I’m always trying to find ways to make calls fun to listen to.
